The Dream returned to the court on Friday to play its second intra-squad scrimmage of the season. Team White, which won the first scrimmage by the score of 120-85, featured the same five players this time around: Randall Whitley, Zach Reigel, Coty Peters, Cory Huff, and Tony Acrie. Team Blue was made up of Bryce Bright, Connor Holobinko, Trey Logan, Jake Perrin, and Albert Varacallo.
Blue opened this scrimmage much stronger than it opened the first scrimmage, outscoring Team White 24-15 in the first frame. In the second quarter, the game was about as even as it could be. Team Blue led the quarter 17-16, resulting in a 41-31 advantage at the half.
The third quarter, however, was an entirely different story. Down by ten, Team White put up 19 points in the frame, while holding Blue to only four points. The dominant quarter not only erased Team Blue’s edge, but it gave White a five point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Team Blue was able to bounce back and have a solid fourth quarter that pushed the game to overtime, tied at 65 points apiece. In the two minute overtime period, Blue put home the only points of the frame to win the game 68-65.
Albert Varacallo led Team Blue in the winning effort with 31 points, 21 of which came on three-pointers, and three assists. All of those numbers were game-highs. Connor Holobinko contributed 20 points of his own and led his squad with 11 assists. Trey Logan added 11 points and nine rebounds, while Bryce Bright scored four points and added two assists. Jake Perrin went for four points and eight rebounds.
For Team White, Tony Acrie and Cory Huff once again were very impressive. Acrie pulled down a game-leading 21 rebounds and added 12 points, while Huff led Team White with 25 points and tacked on 12 rebounds. Zach Reigel scored 12 points in the losing effort, Randall Whitley contributed nine points and four rebounds, and Coty Peters made his mark with six rebounds.
Each squad has now emerged victorious in one of this season’s scrimmages. Will we see a tie-breaking round three? That remains to be seen, but in the meantime, the players will come together for the second PBL Showcase of the season next Saturday, February 6.
